The River

The South Nahanni River in Canada's Northwest Territories, rushes 322 kilometres through Nahanni National Park--one of the most spectacular parks in Canada, perhaps the world! One of North America's finest wild streams, at Virginia Falls the river cascades down twice the height of Niagara Falls to form this continent's most spectacular undeveloped waterfall.

Immediately down river from the falls are eight kilometres of nearly continuous rapids and standing waves created as the river flows through Fourth Canyon.

Four great canyons, up to 1,200 metres deep, line the river. At Rabbitkettle hotsprings, warm (20°C) water radiates outward, to form an intricately terraced mound of tufa rock, more than 27 metres high. A mountain landscape embraces the canyons.

Numerous rapids, several hot springs and unlimited hiking opportunities are among the other highlights of the river. The valley is dominated by geological features so unique that Nahanni National Park was declared the first World Heritage Site by the United Nations.
